THE Federal Health Department has baulked at extending to rural and urban areas a scheme that allows Aboriginal people in remote areas free access to PBS medicines, despite the Australian Pharmaceutical Advisory Council backing the change.
Since 1999, under Section 100 of the National Health Act, Aboriginal Health Services in remote areas have been able to order PBS medicines in bulk from local pharmacies and supply them on site with no co-payment required by patients.
