Bid to remove biopsy barrier to hep C treatment.

PATIENTS with hepatitis C will no longer need a liver biopsy to qualify for subsidised treatment with antiviral drugs if a December Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee recommendation is approved.

The PBAC has recommended that liver biopsy be removed as a requirement before patients are eligible for treatment with peginterferon alfa-2b plus oral ribavirin (Pegatron Combination Therapy).
