THE old adage that women who are 'fair, fat and forty'risk gallstone disease has been backed by research showing a woman's waist circumference can predict her risk of cholecystectomy.
Researchers found women aged 39-66 years with a height-adjusted waist girth of 91cm (36 inches) or above had almost twice the risk of cholecystectomy compared with those whose waist girth was less than 66cm.
Based on data from the Nurses' Health Study, both waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratio were found to be predictive of cholecystectomy after adjustment for BMI - ...
