'JOHN de Jong," I called to the waiting room. I was doing a locum at this surgery, so all patients were new to me.

A man arose, medium height with thick, brown hair, slightly greying at the temples. His face was round and jovial -- an open, inviting face.

"I've got a sore throat," he croaked hoarsely. "My voice is going. I'm not really unwell, but,"and he looked away a little sheepishly, "I have to sing on Saturday night."

He was duly examined and advised, and left quite satisfied.
