CAUSES of fever after travel are destination specific and vary according to the type of traveller seeking treatment, a prospective study shows.

Belgian researchers found malaria was far more common after a stay in tropical regions such as sub-Saharan Africa-- where almost 70% of all travel infections arose. Dengue fever was more prevalent after a visit to Asia or Latin America and enteric fever predominated in travellers to Asia.

Symptoms also differed significantly according to the type of traveller, the study authors said.
