NT SUICIDE RATES CONTINUE TO SOAR

THE national trend of falling suicide rates has not been felt in the NT, where rates among Indigenous Australians have risen by 800%, a study reveals.

Australian Bureau of Statistics data also revealed rates had risen by 30% among non-Indigenous males in the NT over the same 20-year period.

Indigenous males under 45 years and non-Indigenous males over 45 years were at greatest risk, with about 70% of suicides involving alcohol or other drugs.
