I bought my first surfboard when I was 13, and then spent the next five summers sitting just beyond the break at the south end of BondiBeach.

In terms of sun protection, I had a dab of zinc cream on my nose, and that was it. But in those days, who cared? I was young, golden brown and indestructible.

Fast-forward 40 years. The large, bright-red lesion on the left side of my neck was first noticed by my daughter, who described it, clinically, as "gross!"
