NEW long-acting insulins will be the treatment of choice for most type 1 diabetics, an expert says, after the drugs were given an unrestricted listing on the PBS.

Insulin glargine (Lantus) and insulin detemir (Levemir) will be available on the PBS from October for diabetic patients over the age of six years. Both drugs have been listed for type 1 diabetes, and insulin glargine has also been listed for type 2 diabetes. The move follows a protracted campaign by the drugs' manufacturers and diabetes lobby groups.
