SLEEPING PILL NO HELP IN CPAP COMPLIANCE

GIVING male sleep apnoea patients a sleeping pill does not improve compliance during the critical period of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) initiation, a study finds.

Researchers randomised 72 young men with obstructive sleep apnoea to receive 10mg zolpidem, placebo or neither -- which was the standard care -- for the first 14 days of CPAP treatment.

They found participants taking an oral hypnotic did not use CPAP for any more days or time per night than the other groups.
