GPs will no longer have to phone Medicare Australia for permission to prescribe almost half the 450 drugs listed under the authority script system.
The changes, hailed as a major win in the general practice battle against red tape, were announced last week by the Federal Government and should cut by 1.4 million a year the number of calls or written applications doctors are forced to make to obtain an authority script, saving them an estimated 70,000 consultation hours a year.
