FOUR GP obstetricians have won a stand-off with their local area health service following fears it was attempting to downgrade the local hospital's obstetric unit by replacing doctors with midwives.
The GPs, who head Muswellbrook Hospital's obstetric unit in rural NSW, resigned after learning the New England Area Health Service had planned a review of the unit without their consultation and was considering downgrading it to a midwife-only unit.
