A SHORT course of montelukast (Singulair) in children with virally triggered asthma can improve symptoms and reduce school absences and parental time off work, research suggests.

The study of 220 children with intermittent asthma triggered by URTIs found parent-initiated treatment with montelukast -- a specific leukotriene receptor antagonist -- resulted in a 28.5% reduction in asthma episodes requiring unscheduled visits to a GP, paediatrician or hospital compared with placebo.
