NPS cautions GPs on use of antihypertensive-statin.

A NEW combination cardiovascular drug should not be used to initiate therapy, the National Prescribing Service is advising.

The recommendation follows the PBS listing earlier this month of the combination of amlodipine and atorvastatin (Caduet).

The NPS recommended that patients should first be established on each component of the combination as a single drug.

It also stated antihypertensive and lipid-modifying therapy should be chosen on the basis of clinical need, not possible compliance, cost advantages or convenience.
