PATIENTS need to be educated about the impact of after-hours calls on GPs' private lives, according to researchers, with data showing more than 80% of those accessing rural after-hours primary care do not require urgent treatment.

GPs were often called after hours for conditions that were not considered emergencies, said Ms Roberta Morris, manager of the Rural Doctors Workforce Agency's after-hours program.
