I've been gloating over our dead-looking lawn. It's never been watered or fed and has turned a bright khaki colour, proving what a great conservationist I am.

Grass naturally becomes dormant in dry weather. Even in Tasmania we're in a bit of a drought.

The intelligent way to treat lawns in Australia is with benevolent contempt. Simply regard them as nothing more than something to walk across to see the proper garden -- a kind of viewing platform if you like.
