200 GPs cost Medicare $100 million.

ABOUT 200 of the most active GPs in Australia are responsible for a $100 million slice of the Medicare budget, according to figures obtained by Australian Doctor .

The cohort represents Australia's top 1% in terms of service levels. Each GP performed at least 14,000 services, saw at least 6000 patients and earned more than $450,000 from Medicare.

Patient encounters are almost four times the rate of the average of all GPs (including part-timers), who generated by comparison just $157,000 a year in Medicare billings (see graphs, below).
