SUPERANNUATION and age discrimination legislation have made the decision to retire more complicated than it used to be. Doctors in late middle age have to think carefully about when to pull the plug and whether to do it fully or partially.

Two of my friends retired with ceremony. One removed his name from the medical register and the other put his stethoscope in a garbage bin. Others find it difficult to give up the vicarious power of being in control and being needed.
