HEARING centres have come under fire for inappropriate marketing of Federal Government-subsidised services, including cold-calling people in an attempt to drum up business.

The Federal Health Department has investigated the audiologist-staffed centres for "aggressive" telemarketing of government-subsidised services such as hearing tests for pensioners.

National Hearing Centres, a private company that operates more than 40 centres around Australia, was identified as the main user of the marketing strategy.
