METABOLIC syndrome in childhood may cause irreversible atherosclerosis, an Australian expert warns after a study shows the syndrome dramatically increases the risk of later cardiovascular events.

Paediatric metabolic syndrome was associated with an almost 15-fold increased risk of cardiovascular disease in adulthood, according to the US study, which assessed a group of 6-19-year-olds for metabolic syndrome and followed them up 25 years later when they were in their 30s and 40s.
