Manufacturing computing owes much of its speedy technological development to Richard Johnstone.
In the late 1970s, Johnstone, a division head of manufacturer Kearny & Trecker, Milwaukee, WI, was instrumental in developing the Diagnostic Communication System (DCS), a machining center diagnostic system that conducted computer-to-computer troubleshooting on the phone. The basis of the DCS was to make a computer speak directly to the computer control of the machine tool without a human intermediary.
