Renault quits the build-to-order quest.

Renault has abandoned its 15-day order-to-delivery target, citing supply, logistical and distribution problems.

"We haven't managed 15-day delivery," said Francois Hinfray, Renault's senior vice president for sales and marketing. In 2001, "only 21 percent of customers received their car within that time frame."

In 1999, Renault launched its New Distribution Project to cut order-to-delivery time in western Europe, which then averaged eight weeks. The project was also aimed at reducing inventories.
