Automotive News Europe, January, 2002 by Wilson, Amy
Spurred by soaring demand for its X5 sport-utility, BMW may expand its only US manufacturing plant.
With crews on steady overtime, the Spartanburg, South Carolina, plant is operating beyond its scheduled capacity, said Tom Purves, CEO of BMW (US) Holding Corp.
Sales of the X5 rose 118 percent in 2001 to 82,700 vehicles.
"We're working flat out," Purves said. "The shifts are all running like mad now."
Inventories of the X5 are about a 25-day supply, and the wait for the sport-utility typically is three to four months, Purves said.
