WHEN WE launched Automotive News Europe six years ago this month, the big issue was prices. New cars cost too much, consumers said.
Prices varied too much from country to country, the European Union complained.
When customers tried to buy from dealers in other countries some automakers asked their retailers not to play along.
That led to the European Commission's dim view of the special exemption the industry gets from antitrust rules.
But new-car prices have come down substantially since 1996. The industry got very serious about cutting costs.
