JURGEN HUBBERT, head of DaimlerChrysler's Mercedes-Benz passenger car and Smart divisions, is sometimes called "Mr. Mercedes."

The 62-year-old Hubbert is the longest-serving passenger-car division head in Europe.

He initiated a new-product offensive in the early 1990s and has succeeded in re-establishing Mercedes- Benz as the world's leading maker of luxury cars.

Hubbert also delivered record profits last year, while the group's Chrysler unit struggled in the USA.

In September, his contract was extended to 2005.
