WHAT IS a platform? Every carmaker has a different answer to the question. Fiat Auto used to call a platform "the union of a number of systems around a common underbody structure." That sounds simple enough until you examine Frame technology, the Italian carmaker's latest innovation. Frame technology - which debuted in October 2001 on the Fiat Stilo - allows variations in wheelbase, overall length and width. And what's more, those variations are cheap and easy to achieve. That's why Fiat partner General Motors may use Frame technology for future Opels and Saabs.
