Audi to build Magellan crossover.

The Volkswagen Magellan sport-utility concept has been approved for production as an Audi model.

"We will build that car," said Martin Winterkorn, Audi's new CEO. Sales will begin in 2005.

The new Audi will be based on the same platform as the VW Touareg and Porsche Cayenne sport-utilities that will go on sale this autumn, Winterkorn said.

"But it won't be another SUV," added Winterkorn. "Its body will be lower, and more sleek than Touareg. Call it a sports cross."

VW and Porsche have developed the Touareg and Cayenne jointly.
