Toyota's chances of overtaking General Motors or Ford in global sales become more remote if affiliate companies are counted.
Toyota is third in world sales counting only the sales of the main automaker and affiliates that are majority owned: Hino Motors and Daihatsu. In the same sense, GM sales include wholly owned subsidiaries Opel/Vauxhall and Saab, and Ford includes Volvo, Jaguar, Land Rover and Aston Martin.
But what about affiliates that automakers effectively control, even if they own less than 50 percent of the equity?
