Renault will save money on the so-called 5,000 car it is developing at its Dacia unit in Romania by building fewer prototypes.
"The big innovation is that we are doing away with prototypes built with provisional tooling," said Renault spokeswoman Marie de Saint-Cheron.
She said Renault intends to apply this technique, which it borrowed from its alliance partner Nissan, to future cars.
Traditionally, there are three kinds of prototypes. First come zero prototypes: hand-made, static examples that are developed in manufacturers' technical centers.
