THE US dollar was so strong in 1986 that almost every European automaker worked up ambitious plans to sell tens of thousands of cars a year in North America.

It was all settled. Rover Group would sell 50,000 Honda Accord-based 800s in America under the name Sterling. Peugeot would send another 50,000 405s and 505s to the USA.

Citroen had all but decided to re-enter the American market.
