Industry: Email Alert RSS FeedLow-tech cars still work for VW in Brazil.
Automotive News Europe, July, 2002 by Weernink, Wim Oude
Volkswagen's Brazilian model range is largely based on 20-year-old designs.
"With new-car prices as low as 5,000 in Brazil, there is no need for sophistication," said Herbert Demel, president of Volkswagen's South America and South Africa division.
The compact, three-door Gol is VW's top-selling model in Brazil.
"Every fifth new car on the market is a Gol," said Demel.
The Gol shares a platform with the Parati station wagon. Engine installation is longitudinal, as on the locally produced Santana and Quantum.
