Car development is faster, but delays are common; Automakers appear more willing to slow the pace to ensure excellence for critical new models.

Carmakers are accelerating product development to save time and money and get hot products to market as fast as possible.

Shorter schedules are critical. Consumer preferences change rapidly and new segments are emerging. But for a variety of reasons several new-model programs have recently been delayed.

The trend is clearly toward faster development. Electronic tools, for example, have enabled carmakers to bring projects to a much higher level of maturity before cutting metal. That reduces the number of prototypes that are needed and shortens development time.
