Eberspacher's North America gamble pays off ; German supplier rewarded for faith in US r&d center by Chrysler contract.

Eberspacher outflanked North America's largest exhaust-system suppliers this year by winning a major Chrysler group contract.

The victory by the US arm of Eberspacher International GmbH validated a 2000 decision. The Esslingen, Germany-based exhaust and vehicle-heating supplier risked building a $26 million (26.3 million) US research and development center in Novi, Michigan, although it had no contracts in hand.

But Eberspacher's US executives are taking nothing for granted.
