Industry: Email Alert RSS FeedAudi goal: Build only aluminum-body cars.
Automotive News Europe, August, 2002 by Automobilwoche, Wolfgang Eschment
Audi's long-term plan is to build nothing but lightweight, aluminum-bodied cars.
Wolfgang Ruch, director of Audi's aluminum center in Neckarsulm, Germany, confirmed that the German carmaker would increase its use of aluminum.
So far, only the Neckarsulm plant builds cars with aluminum bodies - the A8 and A2. But Ruch said he could envisage a time when Audi's other plants in Ingolstadt, Germany, and Gyor, Hungary, would also be converted to aluminum construction.
"At the moment aluminum is the most interesting lightweight material," said Ruch.
