Volvo is tackling employee stress in an auto industry first - and feeding its results to other Ford group companies.

"The motor industry is one in which stress is deeply involved - cutting costs, cutting employee numbers and working in a highly competitive environment," said Sven Eckerstein, Volvo's senior vice president of human resources.

Absences due to sickness at Volvo Car in Sweden rose from 5.2 percent of the work force in 1999 through 6.3 percent in 2000 to 6.6 percent last year, Eckerstein said.
