BMW is developing large diesel engines to meet strict 2005 emission standards without the need for additives or filters.
BMW expects the diesels to achieve Euro 4 emission rules, said Wolfgang Mattes, head of the testing division of BMWs diesel competence research and development center in Steyr, Austria. Mattes would not comment at BMW's technological approach but said engineering prototypes are already being tested.
