Nissan was the leading Japanese brand in Europe until the late-1990s. Its sales advantage stemmed partly from the English and Spanish factories it set up in the 1980s, long before Toyota and Honda arrived as European manufacturers.
But Nissan's early lead was lost as the parent company in Japan teetered on the verge of bankruptcy in the late 1990s. Product programs were delayed - the Micra will be over a decade old when it is replaced next February. A series of dull vehicles contributed to Nissan's decline.
