Toyota is using the Internet to speed communications with suppliers and reduce parts inventory in a rare change to its famed production process.

Generally considered the auto industry's most efficient, the Toyota Production System stresses simplicity and direct communication. Toyota pioneered the concepts of lean manufacturing and just-in-time parts delivery in developing a process aimed at reducing manufacturing costs and improving quality.
