Ford is surpassing Toyota in lean manufacturing, says Jonathan Ballard, one of the lean-production advisers that Ford hired 30 months ago.
Previously engineering manager at Toyota's Burnaston, England, plant Ballard is well versed in Japanese management techniques. But Ford isn't copying Toyota practices at the Cologne plant, he said.
"Ninety-five percent of how we are doing lean manufacturing here is a Ford way. Only 5 percent is Japanese," he said.
