In a change of strategy, Nissan said it will develop a hybrid vehicle by 2006 using technology purchased from rival Toyota.
Nissan did not say what type of vehicle its hybrid would be, but projected sales of 100,000 units a year in the US market within five years of launch. No sales are expected in Europe.
Company executives had said several times in the past year that the company had no immediate plans to market a hybrid vehicle and would spend its development funds on profitable mainstream models.
