VOLKSWAGEN IS in that awkward period when the Golf and Passat are nearing the end of their life cycles. The Golf has been Europe's best-selling passenger car for 26 of the last 27 years but it isn't No. 1 now. The Peugeot 206 is.

Volkswagen group market share is down significantly in 2002. Not only are sales down at the VW brand, but also at Skoda and Seat, which had been growing impressively until recently.

Intra-group brand confusion and model overlap remain a problem. And VW has missed out on a lot of the new niches that other carmakers have quickly moved into.
