THE GLOBAL auto industry has a common challenge to determine how to make the world's finite oil resources last as long as possible. It also has a responsibility to phase in a substitute for petroleum.

One reason new-car sales are booming here in America is that not only is the love affair with the automobile alive and well, but it's become a love affair with trucks more than cars.

And therein lies the problem.
