Adaptive cruise control systems are leading a new wave of advanced driver assistance systems that could see vehicles almost completely radar controlled in heavy traffic.
Adaptive cruise control technology used by upmarket brands such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Jaguar and Cadillac is already filtering down to volume cars such as the Fiat Stilo. Current systems automatically decelerate the car down to 50kph but the next step will be to bring the vehicle to a complete stop - in an emergency if necessary.
