Controlling car systems totally by wire will not be achieved in the next 15 years, DaimlerChrysler researcher Wilfried Achenbach says.
Electronically linking control systems such as steering and braking, rather than using mechanical linkages, is known as X-by-wire and is used in aircraft. Automakers and top-tier suppliers have forecast a push to by-wire controls for cars as a way to reduce cost and weight.
