Saab Automobile missed out on the longest, strongest rise in demand for prestige products the world has known.

On all counts, General Motors has failed Saab. And that raises a big question. If GM requires over 12 years to turn round a tiny automaker, is it time to think the unthinkable? That GM might be better off without Saab?

Saab's sales this year - fewer than 125,000 units - will be lower than they were before GM first bought a share in the company in 1989.
