Giovanni Agnelli loved his roles as the head of Fiat SpA and leader of Italy's most powerful family. But his greatest satisfaction came when playing on the global stage.

In six decades of involvement with Fiat management, Agnelli's attention was devoted to directing strategy for the Italian automaker. He died Friday at 81. He won't be remembered for day-to-day management, which he always delegated to a strong chief executive. Agnelli's contribution is Fiat's global reach.
