Michelin is trying to establish an industry standard for programmable chips that can be embedded into tires.

Michelin has offered to share its new radio frequency tire identification (RFID) technology - showcased in Detroit - with other tire makers. Several tire makers are currently assessing Michelin's technology for durability. The French tire maker is also working with "at least one international OEM" to bring the technology to market in model year 2005.
