Cherry set to retire

General Motors design chief Wayne Cherry will retire this autumn. Vice Chairman Bob Lutz announced Cherry's plans last week at the Detroit auto show.

Cherry, GM's vice president for design centers, had been expected to retire last September when he turned 65. But Lutz extended his tenure, allowing Cherry to lead GM's design staff through the transition to a new product development system that gives designers more autonomy.

GM has given no indication of Cherry's successor.
