Supplier criticism is short-sighted

To the Editor:

I READ your editorial "It's time to rethink the supply chain" (December 16 edition) with great interest. Just this morning, I had breakfast with an industry consultant where we discussed the outlook with regard to industry automation.

Automakers have tried to reduce costs by pressing vendors on price while still having these same vendors maintain high levels of investments for product and support - a formula that will not work over the long term.
