Germany will be a testing ground for Fiat Auto's strategy of creating factory owned marketing units to compete in expensive city centers.

Dealers often struggle to operate offices, showrooms and workshops profitably in metropolitan areas with high property costs. But Fiat hopes the new factory owned units will give it a more aggressive presence in European cities.

The first three subsidiaries in Germany opened this month in Frankfurt, Hamburg and Dusseldorf, operating a total of 15 sales sites.
