Airbags, catalytic converters, lightweight materials - automotive engineers have a long tradition of finding solutions to challenges that threaten the industry.
But for the past two years, solutions to falling attendance and suppliers' lack of interest in an annual gathering in Detroit have eluded the Society of Automotive Engineers.
The professional organization can boast of record numbers of technical papers presented at the SAE World Congress, but it can't stop the exodus of Tier 1 suppliers from the event's exposition.
